MET Costume Institute Gala 2011

Last night's annual MET Costume Institute Gala red carpet did not disappoint. It was like a grand finale to everything we've seen in fashion, on red carpets, and in current events over the past year. McQueen has become a household name (as well as Sarah Burton) what with being the name behind Kate Middleton's dress (no big deal). It was only appropriate that his legacy was honored last night. There were also strong influences of Black Swan, and I couldn't help but notice how prevalent Marchesa was on the red carpet.

To set the scene, it looks like this very well could have been the sight of William & Kate's reception, straight out of an English garden:

It was obvious that these people were wearing their Royal Wedding attire since they got snubbed on an invite. Doesn't quite work over here...Ashley Olsen's sleeves were a spitting image of Diana's wedding gown. It looks like Serena Williams wanted to be the bride.

White done right, and wrong....Emma Roberts is quickly becoming a little fashion-icon.

Major trends from last night were GOLD and long sleeves. Long sleeves everywhere. There were also a few refreshing pops of color (I LOVE Brooklyn Decker's hot pink look). And Gwyneth takes the cake in the gold category.

Sometimes less is more. These classic & simple dresses were fabulous. Stella McCartney's uneven hemline and contrasting lining were gorg. I love her.

Black (and white) Swans...

Christina Ricci in Zac Posen was the stand-out Black Swan queen.

More ballerina influence: Top Knots galore...

Gowns with details that caught my eye...

Let's get to the bad before I tell you my favorites...

Prints that just did NOT work:

Others that are just beyond words... these people can choose from almost anything to wear to this event, and they chose these?? Really, what were they thinking?

So, who reigned supreme? These lovely ladies came close...

...but the Queens of the night were Renee Zellweger and Diane Kruger (AND Brooklyn Decker & Gwyneth Paltrow in my opinion). Do we even need to talk about Renee's back? Gaaaaa.....

Not sure what I'm more jealous of with Brooklyn, the fact that she's married to Andy Roddick, or the fact that she's my age, or both.
